You’ve been working out in order to lose weight, but are not seeing the results you are hoping for. What is going on? You are doing all of the exercises that the “gurus” tell you to, but the weight simply is not coming off. You actually think you may have gained some weight. If you aren’t sure about what is happening, you need to take a look at your lifestyle. 2307
Smoking, making happy hour regularly and sitting down most of the time are lifestyle choices that can wreck the best exercise plans. Those lifestyle decisions pale in comparison, however, to a poor diet when it comes to ruining your physical fitness efforts. 2306
We used to think that the best way to get in shape, lose weight, and stay healthy was to exercise a lot.
There is nothing wrong with that idea. Being up and moving is much better for you than being sitting and sedentary. If you sit more than 5 or 6 hours a day (start keeping a sitting journal to find out just how many hours you are sitting), fitness experts and health scientists say that is as deadly and unhealthy as smoking a pack or two a day. So exercise is good for maximum health. 2305
However, it can’t undo a constant onslaught of poor eating habits and other unhealthy lifestyle choices.
Take this example. You begin running. You slowly build up to 5 miles a day. You are sweating, burning calories, carbohydrates and fat, and you feel good about your efforts. You are doing so well in fact that you are actually losing a little weight. So after a 5 day mile run one day, you treat yourself to a 20 ounce energy drink and a “healthy” snack that is low-fat (meaning it probably has sugar to replace the fat flavor) and guess what happens? You have just consumed more than 500 cal. All of your work has been undone. 2302
You can’t use exercise to replace poor nutrition habits because of the dramatically negative impact bad food has on the human body. Junk food manufacturers are so skilled at removing as much nutrition as possible from the food-like products they make and sell that all you are eating with many processed foods are empty calories, unhealthy, simple carbohydrates, and wonderfully addictive poisons like refined sugar, salt and MSG 2301.
Remember, six pack abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym.
You’re not a professional athlete who has the benefit of a scientifically laid-out fitness regime that lasts 6 to 8 hours each day, and includes unhealthy supplements to trim your body. You will never hit your peak performance physically if you fuel your workouts with little nutrition, and offset them with other unhealthy lifestyle choices. If you go in the other direction and trim your calorie and carb count, you will have no energy to exercise. You can also get sick or injured when your body is not getting enough healthy nutrients, minerals and vitamins, including complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids. 2303
Nutritionists and certified fitness coaches understand that nutrition is responsible for as much as 70% or 75% of the way your body looks, feels and performs. So get your diet right first, cut back on the amount of alcohol, tobacco products, caffeine and other unhealthy lifestyle choices you are making, then add regular exercise for a 100% chance at becoming healthier. 2262
